The Freedom Christian Music Department currently offers four choirs for students in 6th – 12th grade. The 6th Grade Choir, 7th/8th Grade Choir, and Chorale (9-12) are open to any students in those grades without an audition, while Chamber Singers (9-12 small ensemble) is open by audition. Students gain skills in tone production, sight singing, vocal techniques, music theory, basic piano skills, music history, leadership, team work, and self-confidence.
Performances:
- Choir students perform in three formal concerts each year (Fall, Christmas, and Spring).
- Each choir attends MSVMA district choral festival in the winter and goes on to state festivals when they qualify.
- Each year at the January homecoming basketball game, the entire choir department sings the national anthem before the varsity game.
- Choirs perform in chapel 3-4 times each year.
- Chamber Singers have many extra performances including a Renaissance Feast, Christmas party concerts, local church performances, singing for special events at school, and hosting a variety show.
- In 2011 the choirs and bands recorded a professional Christmas CD called Visions of Christmas.
- We have been in discussion of travel (touring) with our ensembles. Although that has not happened, it is a high priority for the curriculum of the music department.
Optional Activities:
- Students may choose to take voice lessons which are offered at an extra cost by local voice teachers and Mr. Bouwman.
- Students may audition and attend the MSVMA Honors Choirs.
- Students may perform at the MSVMA district and state solo and ensemble festival as a soloist.
- Students may audition and be a part of the worship teams for chapel.
- Students have many concert opportunities that are advertised in the choir department as they become available.
